What PMI actually publishes about CPMAI scoring
The ECO is precise about structure and silent about thresholds:

The 20 pretest questions matter more than they look: you can't tell them from scored questions, so as far as your exam experience goes, all 120 count — but 20 of your answers have no effect on the result. One more reason a self-estimated "I think I got 75%" tells you little.
Where the "70%" claims come from
Prep sites assert a 70% (sometimes 70–75%) CPMAI pass mark as if it were policy. We could not find any current PMI source publishing a passing score, and the ECO — the authoritative exam document — contains none. These figures appear to be provider recommendations and echoes of older, pre-PMI exam descriptions repeated until they hardened into "fact." (The certification changed hands when PMI acquired Cognilytica in September 2024 and was rebuilt against a 2025 job-task analysis — older descriptions of the exam do not automatically carry over.)
Treat any specific number you read as a study target someone chose, not a threshold PMI committed to.
What readiness looks like without a published score
The same four questions we recommend for the PMP apply cleanly to CPMAI — with the weighting facts baked in:
1. Are you consistently at or above a target — not just once?
Pick a demanding practice target and hold yourself to it across several sessions of first-attempt answers. One good run is noise; a consistent level is evidence.
2. Is every domain above the line — especially the big two?
Business Needs (26%) and Data Needs (26%) are more than half the scored exam between them. An overall average propped up by model-development questions while business/data scenarios lag is precisely the wrong shape for this test. Check each of the five domains separately.
3. Can you hold judgment quality for 160 unbroken minutes?
Unlike the PMP, CPMAI has no scheduled breaks — 120 questions straight through. At least one full-length, timed run matters even more here; watch for accuracy decay in the final third.
4. Is your trend stable or improving?
If your practice history is trending up and holding across domains after your most recent study push, that's readiness. A single hot session after a cram is not.
